Welcome! Meet Patty Wagenhofer, LMSW

Location: Grand Rapids

Specialties: Trauma, Addiction, Depression, Anxiety, and LGBTQ+ Affirming Therapy

Ages: 18+

With over three decades of experience as a licensed masters clinical social worker, I am dedicated to guiding adults toward healing, growth and renewed purpose.  I believe in the capacity to change and am open to new perspectives and feedback.  If you are an adult that is looking for personal growth, authenticity and self responsibility, and desires a more fulfilled life, I can help you.  You may be struggling with self doubt, feel stuck, face challenges with work life balance or relationships.  I can help people feel more confident, assertive and in control of their lives.  If you are willing to show up I am willing to help.

I specialize in trauma, depression, anxiety and addiction.  As a survivor of trauma, I understand that it's not about what is wrong with you, it is about what happened to you.  I  also have personal and lived experience  with identity issues and internal struggles and have learned to claim a life that aligns with my authentic self.

As a LGBTQ+ therapist and member of the community, I focus on creating an environment that is affirming, respectful and welcoming.  Your story matters and together we will co-create a treatment journey that honors your unique strengths and challenges.

I am originally from Waterloo, Iowa and have spent most of my adult life in Flint Michigan.  I moved to Rockford 4 years ago with my wife after she got a job offer that was too hard to pass up.  I have a blended family with three adult children and of course my two dogs, Liebe and Piper.  I love biking, walking the trails with my dogs, yoga, and kayaking.

This is my first time in therapy. What can I expect?

In therapy, you can expect a welcoming and supportive space where we’ll work together to explore your feelings, set personal goals, and develop coping strategies for challenges like anxiety, stress, grief, and more. I’ll tailor our approach using techniques like cognitive behavioral therapy and mindfulness to meet your unique needs, empowering you to make positive changes at your own pace.

How do I get started with therapy?

The first step is to fill out the contact form with your information to the best of your ability. One of our intake specialists will then reach out to answer any questions you may have and schedule a brief phone consultation. During this call, we’ll ask you to share a little about yourself and discuss what you’d like to focus on in therapy!

Do you accept Insurance?

Unity Counseling offers a wide range of accepted insurances such as Blue Cross Blue Shield, Cigna, Optum, Priority Health, UMR, and United Healthcare. Along with accepting some Medicaid and Medicare! Unity Counseling also offers out of network, private pay avalbile on a sliding scale. If you don't see your insurance or have questions, please give us a call (616-439-1866) to learn more!

How often would we meet?

There is no one-size-fits-all when it comes to therapy. In the beginning, we typically recommend meeting on a weekly basis. This gives us a chance to get to know one another, and as our work together develops, we encourage personal assessments so we can create a schedule that suits your specific needs.
