Eating Disorder Treatment (Outpatient, Mild–Moderate)
Compassionate support for eating concerns and body image—available in Grand Rapids, Muskegon, and Alpena, with online therapy across Michigan.
Feeling stuck in a loop of food rules, body checking, or guilt after meals can be exhausting. You might spend a lot of time thinking about eating, size, or exercise—yet still feel out of control or never “good enough.” At Unity Counseling, we provide outpatient psychotherapy for mild to moderate eating disorder symptoms and body-image concerns. Our team offers respectful, evidence-informed care that helps you build a more peaceful relationship with food, movement, and your body.
Service scope: We treat mild–moderate presentations in an outpatient setting. If a higher level of care is needed, we’ll help you connect with an appropriate program and coordinate referrals with your permission.
What We Help With
Persistent worries about weight, shape, or appearance
Restrictive rules around eating or cycles of restricting and overeating
Urges to compensate for eating behaviors (e.g., rigid exercise rules, restriction, purging)
Binge eating or overeating even without a restriction cycle
Body checking, avoiding mirrors/photos, or frequent comparison to others
Shame, anxiety, or low self-worth linked to food or your body
Disordered eating patterns and body-image distress (with or without a formal diagnosis)
Life transitions or stress that intensify unhelpful patterns
We support teens and adults. Sessions are offered in person and via secure telehealth across Michigan.
How Therapy Helps
Your therapist will collaborate with you on a plan that fits your goals, values, culture, and support system. Treatment may include:
CBT-based strategies to change unhelpful thought–behavior cycles
ACT & mindfulness to relate differently to difficult thoughts and feelings
DBT-informed skills for emotion regulation and distress tolerance
Compassion-focused, identity-affirming care (including LGBTQ+-affirming therapy)
Non-diet, weight-inclusive approaches that emphasize overall well-being
Family involvement (when helpful) to strengthen support at home
Between sessions, you’ll practice realistic skills that gradually shrink the space eating and body worries take up in daily life.
Is Outpatient a Good Fit?
Outpatient counseling is often appropriate when you can safely engage in weekly therapy and maintain day-to-day responsibilities. If we determine you’d benefit from additional medical or nutritional support, we can—with your permission—collaborate with your primary care provider or a registered dietitian to round out your care.
When a Higher Level of Care May Be Appropriate
If safety or medical stability is a concern, a program that provides intensive daily support (IOP, PHP, or residential) may be a better starting point. During your intake, we’ll discuss what level of care best matches your needs and help with referrals if indicated.
What Sessions Are Like
Warm, nonjudgmental space focused on your story and strengths
Personalized goals, revisited as you grow
Practical skills to try between sessions
Flexible scheduling, including telehealth statewide if you prefer meeting from home
